God has given the commandment, “Do not to make idols of anything above, below, or in the earth” (Ex 20:4). For Christians this seems like a simple command to follow, but we miss the idols that we have made that are right in front us every day.
Most of today’s idols here in the West are faceless such as money, fame, sports, self, food, drink, & the list goes on. In Col 3:5, we are told, “Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, & greed which is idolatry.” A while back I was listening to the Living Waters podcast. In the episode, one of the members quoted Billy Graham when he said, “Give me five minutes with a person’s checkbook & I will tell you where their heart is.” This hit me hard as started to remember back to the idol of my life that I had to destroy in order to follow Christ. For me it was rodeo or the cowboy lifestyle. The money I wasted on horses, entry fees, equipment costs, fuel, etc. was astronomical. I was just gambling & wasting God’s money. My dream was to be a great rodeo cowboy, but that unfortunately wasn’t ever going to come to fruition. The time, financial backing, & training was simply not there to achieve my dream.
Now I’m not saying a person can’t have a hobby, play sports, or even make a living doing what they love. We have great freedom in Christ (1 Cor 10:31). What I’m saying is God showed me my idol. He showed me how I was unwisely using the resources that He had graciously given me. Now I still love horses & rodeo, & I hope God will bring that back into my life one day, but for now that has been put on hold. His grace is sufficient for me & I am putting Gods desires for my life before my own. If you are at a roadblock in life spiritually, between family members, financially, or whatever it is, then examine yourself to see if you still have any idols still in front of the Lord.
