Megiddo Mosaic

What evidence exists outside of the Bible for the early Christian affirmation of Jesus Christ as God? A few weeks ago, I wrote about the “Alexamenos Graffito,” an ancient piece of graffiti that, from a non-Christian perspective, confirms that early Christians held to the deity of Christ. Recently, I’ve learned of another archeological find that, like the Graffito, demonstrates that early Christians believed in Christ as God. This find is called the “Megiddo Mosaic.”

Dating to around the 200s, the Mosaic was discovered near the ancient town Megiddo in Israel, beneath a modern prison. It was part of what is believed to be one of the earliest Christian worship spaces, possibly a church. The mosaic contains inscriptions, including a dedication “to the God Jesus Christ,” offering early evidence of Christian belief in His divinity. This inscription along with the beautiful artwork of the Mosaic shows us that ancient Christians were very much like us: their faith in Christ as God moved them to proclaim that faith.

As a pastor, my burden is to persuade you that the facts support Christianity. Scripture, history, archeology, and whatever else teach that Christ literally came, lived, died, rose from the dead. When it comes to the truth, Christians have nothing to fear and everything to celebrate. During this Advent season, hold firm to your confession of faith, dear brother and sister, that Christ is truly God and man who has fully paid for all our sins and reigns forever. Believe!
